These first-class gut strings are largely similar to historic hand-polished strings in that they have only a fraction of fibres cut through compared to the grinding methods otherwise used at present. The use of whole sheep gut, not cut into strips, is not only in keeping with Italian manufacturing methods of the past, but has also resulted in strings with superior acoustic and mechanical properties compared to conventional strings - made from beef or sheep gut strips. HU-type strings have a surface that has been polished only as little as necessary to ensure that the string is fifth clean; the string is then lightly oiled.

The standard length is 120 cm up to a diameter of 2.00 mm. For diameters larger than 2.00 mm, the standard length is180 cm.
